Veronica A. "Ronnie" (McLeer) Checkman

New Bedford, MA. – Veronica “Ronnie” Anne Checkman, (85) of Wareham passed away at home on March 20, 2023, with her family at her side.  Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised on Long Island, New York, she was the daughter of the late Frank McLeer and the late Rita (Monsees) McDade.

In the mid-1960s, Ronnie relocated to the Wareham area where she met and married the late Charles F. Checkman.  There, she spent the remainder of her years raising her family and working as a licensed nurse for several medical facilities in the greater Wareham and South Coast area. 

In her spare time, Ronnie enjoyed spending time with her friends and family especially her grandchildren, putting her feet in the sand at the beach, reading a good book and going for drives to explore places familiar and new.

She is survived by her children: Michael C. Checkman (Leslie) of Charlestown, MA., Thomas S. Checkman (Stephanie) of Mattapoisett, MA., Elizabeth Moniz of New Bedford, MA in addition to her loving grandchildren: Steven Gilpin, Nicholas Moniz, Sophie Moniz, Ava Moniz and Liam Checkman, and sisters: Geraldine Heinssen (Charles) of AZ, Kathryn Kirwin (Larry) of NC and Lorraine McDade of VA. She is also the sister of the late William McDade. 

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend her visitation on Thursday March 23, from 5-7pm in the Wareham Village Funeral Home 5 Center St. Wareham, MA 02571.  Her interment will be private.
