Thomas Brendan Maughan Leahy

CAPE COD - Thomas Brendan Maughan Leahy died with his parents at his hospital bedside June 21, 2024, at the age of 35.

Brendan was born at Falmouth Hospital August 3, 1988, the first son of MB Maughan and Michael Leahy. He attended the Waldorf School of Cape Cod. He was home-schooled as a part of Abbington Academy, a grade 1 through 12 parent cooperative alternative school where he received his high school diploma in 2004.

He received his BA from Simon’s Rock College of Bard in 2008 with a double major in Physics and Political Science, and his BS in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2011. He did graduate work in mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. After college, he worked in his parents’ medical practice in Falmouth, aiding them with the transition to electronic medical records.

Brendan was smart, funny, kind, and brave. He was especially interested in mathematics. He taught himself calculus prior to formal schooling from a calculus textbook he found at the Swap Shop and couldn’t wait to advance even further once he started first grade.

His breadth of knowledge was amazing: there was no discussion on any topic to which he could not add a relevant fact. He had a sly and subtle sense of humor; his humor was sometimes evident only after a moment’s thought. Brendan was a gentle soul, kind, and patient in his encounters with others, asking for very little. And brave: because of the lingering effects of a childhood brain tumor, much of our social world made no intuitive sense to him, and could seem strange and unwelcoming, and sometimes mean. He nonetheless did his best to steel himself and face the world every single day.

He is survived by his parents, MB Maughan and Michael Leahy, his brother Connor-Michael Connor Maughan Leahy, and sister-in-law Ginevra of New York City, and his cat Purrcy.

A private memorial service will be arranged at a later date.
