Nancy Ayotte Obituary

Centerville-Nancy L. Ayotte, 77, passed away on Monday August 17, 2026 at Home with her dear friend Amanda and beloved feline Charlie at her side.

MS. Ayotte was born on Nantucket, MA the daughter of the late Louis R. and Katherine (Cahoon) Ayotte.   She graduated from Nantucket High School, North Adams State College and Boston College.  She moved to Cape Cod in the early 1980’s.

She was employed for more than 35 years by the Cape Cod Times, first as a reporter on Nantucket and later on the Cape.  She was a reporter for 10 years and later as a Times Copy Editor.  Working full time at the paper MS. Ayotte earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Boston College. She worked part time for the paper until her retirement. Nancy was also a strong supporter of the local Democratic Committee.

As a social worker she worked for Cape Cod Human Services, first as an outreach clinician with the long term mentally ill living in the community.  And later in the agency’s drug and alcohol addiction treatment center.  She worked briefly for the Hospitals Workers Union as a union organizer.  She later worked for Neurobehavioral Associates of South Hingham, providing support for nursing home residents.  She worked for nearly five years as a case manager as what was then called Jewish Memorial Hospital in Roxbury now Radius Specialty Hospital.  At the time of her retirement, she was the director of social services at the Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled care Center in Wareham where she began working in 2005.

MS. Ayotte enjoyed researching her family genealogy and was surprised to learn that on her mother’s side, the family traced back to the Mayflower descendants as well as the Wampanoag through Mary Hyanno, granddaughter of Sachem Iyannough, who married a European Austin Bearse.  She also found many links to the United Kingdom and enjoyed several trips to Scotland exploring her family roots.  She also had great interests in alternative health therapies and revisionist history.
