Wareham-Joseph D. Hamel, 80, passed away on Wednesday July 18, at Tobey Hospital. He was the loving companion of Catherine "Penny" Ellis also of Wareham. Joseph was born in New Bedford, MA the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Henriques) Hamel.
He has lived in Wareham for the past 22 years and had worked for the Johnson and Johnson Co. as an assembler. He was well known for his nautical artistry beginning with scrimshaw then painting and drawing. He enjoyed crossword and word jumble games. He was an avid Beatles and Patriots fan and a member of the New England Viking Motorcycle Club.
He was also survived by his son Marcus Hamel, his Aunt Ollie Henriques and his sister Diane Hamel of Acushnet. He was adored by Catherine "Suzy" Wood and her husband Carlston of Wareham, Linda Holt and her husband Norman of Marion, Donna Richard and her husband Donald of Wareham, Thomas Carney and his wife Christina of Wareham and Christian Ellis and his wife Heather of Buzzards Bay. He was also survived by 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, three special girls, Baxter & Katie and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was the father of the late Christopher D. Hamel and brother of the late Nancy Rothwell.
