Mashpee-Phyllis (Byrne) McArdle, 96 of Mashpee formerly of Mattapoisett, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday December 14, 2023. She was the wife of the late Bill McArdle. She was born in Lexington, MA, the daughter of the late Dennis and Albertina (Bettencourt) Byrne.
Phyllis spent her entire childhood in Lexington where she attended Lexington public schools. She loved the town of Lexington and often spoke of her wonderful childhood there. After graduating high school, Phyllis moved to Washington, D.C. She began working as an operator for New England Telephone and Telegraph Co. While living and working in Washington, D.C., she met and married Russell Klopfer, Jr.
In 1968, Phyllis moved to South Dennis, MA with her two sons. In 1970, she moved her family to a home in Yarmouthport, MA. While living on Cape Cod, Phyllis continued to work for New England Telephone as a Supervisor, met and married Bill McArdle. Upon retirement in 1976, Phyllis and Bill moved to Island Falls, Maine, where they were pioneers in the art of home renovations and house flipping. They moved to Mattapoisett, MA in 1987. Years after her husband’s passing, Phyllis moved to Mashpee, MA to be closer to family. She enjoyed baking, knitting, gardening, and swimming. Phyllis was a lovely, selfless woman who was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Phyllis is survived by her sons: Russell Irving Klopfer, III and his wife Rachel of Ohio and Richard Byrne Klopfer and his wife Cynthia of Mashpee. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Christian, Effy, Alexander, Russell, Annika, and Eric. In addition, she is survived by 9 great grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Dennis Byrne, William Byrne, Ronald Byrne, and Dorothy McConnell.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 11 am in Agawam Cemetery, Stillman Memorial Drive, Wareham. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
